Dear
Jackie,
The U.S. Congress continues to move closer to adopting budget
and tax legislation that would be harmful to
America’s
children.
Congressional Federal Budget
Update This
week House leaders are likely to either bring the budget to a vote
on the floor or give it up for the year. House leaders are still
trying to bridge differences between those members of Congress
opposing to further cuts in programs that help children and
families and members advocating cuts. The House could vote on the
budget as soon as today. (For an analysis of the House budget, click
here.)
Congressional Tax Legislation
Update Senate
and House negotiators have reached a deal on the provisions of a $70
billion tax cut bill. These tax breaks that mostly benefit the
wealthy are being paid for by cuts in programs that help children
and families and increased borrowing on the "federal credit card."
Thus, America's
children are getting hit twice-- children's programs are being cut
and children (and their children) are going to have to pay
the bill down the road. |

New Minnesota Poll Shows Kids A Top
Priority |

The Minnesota Children's Platform Committee and
the Every Child Matters Education Fund released a poll showing

You've Got To Be Kidding! |
| The
Senate-House tax cut deal taking shape would provide
millionaires with $42,000 and only $20 for average
Americans. The centerpiece of the Senate-House
deal
is
the two-year extension of tax cuts for capital gains and
dividends that primarily benefits the wealthy. For details,
read the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Analysis by clicking
here. | | What You Can Do to Help: Call your
U.S. Senators and Representative toll-free at 1-800-459-1887 and tell
them:
- When
8.2 million children don’t have health insurance, cutting Medicaid is
wrong.
- When
millions of children are abused/or neglected, cutting child
protection is wrong.
- When
millions of children don’t have access to early childhood programs,
cutting child care is wrong.
- Cutting
programs that help children and families in order to pay for more tax
breaks for the wealthy is morally
indefensible.
We'll keep you posted on how federal
budget and policy developments are impacting children and families, and
what you can do to help.
Sincerely,
Michael Petit President,
